WJS-GJS Newsletter: Information Technology Jobs: Are you looking at the right places?
April 27, 2006

Editor's Note

Each time I send a newsletter, my inbox is flooded with mail. Bounced mails; Thank you mails; Auto-replies; Even few unpleasant emails. Now you may wonder who would be sending the unpleasant emails... well its obviously those who have been job-hunting but unsuccessful. And therefore, frustrated. They would blame the system, the society, the internet, even volunteer efforts like ours.

I only ask one question: Are you working HARD, or working SMART at your job hunting? If you are working hard, then the chances are that you will get tired, exhausted, and possibly frustrated. If you are working smart, then you probably wont remain a "job-seeker" for too long.

And that brings us to the article of this newsletter...

Information Technology Jobs: Are you looking at the right places?

What is your job search strategy? Do you have a daily target to achieve? A daily target of :
how many people to contact,
how many resumes to send,
how many sources to tap,
how many new networks to probe,
and even
how many new websites to scan and explore?

Most people don't work that way. They feel that since they are unemployed, they have all the time in the world. On the other hand, the passive job-seekers (people who are already employed and simply looking for a better job) are often in no hurry either because they know there is pay-cheque at the end of the month.

First of all, you should have a check-list, no matter you are an active or passive job-seeker. And you should regularly critique your job hunting performance.

I will now cut the chase and come to the focus of this article: Information Technology jobs.

IT jobs were probably the first ones to take maximum advantage of the internet and therefore there is a huge number of websites that focus on IT jobs. Plus there are tons of mailing lists / discussion groups / list-serv / yahoo groups and communities that also aggressively pass-on and circulate IT jobs information around the world.

What does all this mean?
It means if you are looking for a job in the Information technology sector, then you just can not justify to your dad that you are really working hard on your job hunt by simply reading the local newspapers, or perhaps the major job boards like Monster and Yahoo HotJobs.

You need to go beyond them.

This section of the directory contains, hold your breath, 383, yes sir, three-hundred-eighty-three websites that cover IT jobs. Can you believe that? Even if you take a pessimistic approach and say that each "website" only contains 10 IT jobs then that comes to 3,830. Surely the total number would be probably 10x or even 100x.

So friends, I leave you with this category and insist, no, I beg you, not to rely on just one website, or one source of information. Just like you are out there hunting for a job, trust me, there are thousands of employers and recruiters desperately looking for folks like you.

So go get them!

Good Luck with your job search.
